Mock Up Kit Designs

By: Steve | April 10th, 2008

Here are some designs made by an Everett company called Luminous Creative

Apparently they were reviewed and rejected by the Seattle franchise, who chose to go with a different firm.

Here they are:

Mock Up 1

Mock up 2

Mock up 3

Mock up 4

Looking at these kits and logos makes me extremely nervous. Although some sport a different name, the logos are way way way better than the one that ended up being chosen. Also, the jerseys all look slick. Now I am definitely dreading what they are gonna come up with. See my Henry article for one possible option.

I find it irritating that the logo has the Space Needle incorporated into it. It must have been a committee that agreed the logo should contain it. Morons. I think that most everyone knows that the Space Needle is in Seattle, we don’t friggin’ need it in the team’s logo. You don’t see the Seahawks or the Mariners cramming the Needle or Pike’s Market into their logo. Stupid. It’s a football team not a theme park you idiots!

Sorry, I get a little heated when we get the wrong people making choices about design and logos. Overall the choices are excellent except the second one where the needle is the focal point. I dig the first one with the Native American head in there and the color scheme for the jerseys and the logo on the third one. But what do I know, I’m just an Art Director. IDIOTS!!!

OMG, the first, third, and fourth are all f**king badass. Let’s hope the kits are something even close to those…

I just don’t know why people in Seattle are so addicted to this blue-green ,,whatever that is color…am I missing something..the seahawks jerseys are one of the most ugliest on Earth..I know people are gonna scream at me but the truth is the truth! also I second Mauro’s opinion..there is no need for a building on the logo..its not like its the Taj Mahal or something

If they went with the 4th one, they ought to pay royalties to Juventus…

yes, the hawks jerseys are pretty ugly.

mat, I dont know if you have ever been to Seattle, but if you had, you would know exactly why we have a blue and green obsession. Seattle is not your typical city. Especially in the summer, the city is essentially blue and green (water and trees).

I definitely prefer the Chief Sealth head to the Space Needle.

Might as well make it the starbucks logo

Love the third one. It is pretty sharp. As for the blue and green, they represent the colors of Seattle — the blue for the surrounding waters and green for the evergreen trees that dominate the landscape. This is the new Seattle team isn’t it??

Hey, Steve, the comment I posted at work came through as spam. Bah! And it was in defense, too…

I think the overall shape of the 2nd crest isn’t a traditional football club crest shape, so that one looks out of place. The rest of them look unbelievably awesome. I would buy one (or several) of those shirts in an instant.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the more I look at these the more I find that they all carry a lot of borrowed interest. The first one seems to be the most original but I see a disconnect between the team name and the Chief Sealth image. Not sure they should be part of the logo together. But I like it because it’s not the Space Needle.

The second one is easily the worst. I looks like it could be the logo for Stratosphere Hotel in Vegas. Totally over the top.

The third reminds me of the Scottish flag, but it’s very reminiscent of a UK team. If that’s what the league wants to model itself after, I can live with that.

The fourth is totally Juventus. If they were going with this one I’d expect the away jersey to be striped like the Juve jersey which I wouldn’t dislike altogether. This one is closest. I do dig the color palette here though. I’d like it if they incorporated the dark green here in the first one and of course, remove the Sounders name from the logo.

Despite all this, at least they don’t look like the first set of over the top/ham handed logos that the league had designed for the initial 10 teams. The old San Jose Clash logo, the KC Wizards, NY MetroStars and the Dallas Burn logo were awful and I still dislike the Revolution’s logo. I honestly thought they could pass for logos for roller coasters at Six Flags. The logos Sirius have designed for their music channels are also reminiscent of the first set of team logos by the league.

While I am the first one to criticize, I should be the first to congratulate the Rapids and Galaxy for their redesigns this past year. Their logos and kits look fantastic, clean and well designed as well as very good color choices and combinations.

I have to say, I also get a little green/blue tired. I like the orange in the second as a foil.

And I dont have any problem with the space needle. There are buildings and monuments all over the world that have come to represent the cities they are built in. Plus I dig its neogothic futuristic utopianism.

Aesthetically I like the Chief Sealth profile, but the Duwamish may not like a soccer team co-opting him - it might be a little disrespectful. I mean, Seattle is in King County, which was re-dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. but they would never put his profile on a logo for a Seattle sports team — stylized or not.

So, what does that leave us? Not a whole lot. Maybe a tree or a salmon or something. None of those things really scream Seattle. Anyway, it is better than the Dallas cow or the slightly fascist eagle for DC United (which is nicely designed, but kind of creepy).

Can we all agree that, when revealed, the real kits will be nowhere near as cool as these? …and the logos for that matter…

I can agree to that. The logo already sucks some serious ass by comparison to these or the Colorado Rapids one. That one, by far, is my favorite MLS team logo and color scheme.

mock up 1 was perfect, badge and kit, the new badge is pretty discusting, sticking with the trend of corny MLS graphics (coming from a supporter of the league)
