And While We’re on the Topic of Excellent Videos…
By: Laurie | April 6th, 2009And lo, another rivalry is born.
From the video creator:
A fanbase who can not stop throwing things at players and can’t be bothered to stick around after their team goes 2-0 down at the half had the audacity to say that they were going to show our team what a “Real football atmosphere is like.”
Perhaps they’d like to come to Qwest field to see first hand what a real atmosphere is like in a real stadium, not the glorified high school stadium their team currently plays in.We were told our team couldn’t possibly win on the road, in “MLS’s Most Hostile Atmosphere”, without Fredy Montero.
Check the score.
To Toronto FC fans and the whole damn league:
The Sounders haven’t lost a game.
The Sounders haven’t allowed a goal.
The Sounders have the best fans.
The Sounders have the best home field atmosphere.
The Sounders have the best team.
Keep on hatin’ and we will keep on winning.
Your hate only makes us stronger.
Sounders til I die!
(Thanks, Travis!)

See, wont it be fun when Portland and Vancouver get teams?
Toronto can be our starter-rivalry, someone to practice on.

“glorified high school stadium ” hahahahahaha thats funny but i hope you guys are still perfect when you come down to LA. If we get things done against LA Galaxy, Sounders vs Chivas USA will be a good game. Hope we take your undefeated streak

Apparently one of the reasons the stadium looked so empty during the second half is that the concourse is poorly designed, so there were huge backups for concessions and restrooms.
I’m guessing that after this, Toronto fans won’t pee for the rest of the season.

Hi Laurie, regular reader of TheOffside here! Love your writings! Did you recently move to Washington? Just last year, you were blogging for the Galaxy.

The wait times are the excact reason why it looks empty at the start of the second half, the 70mph winds and being right by the water didn’t help keep the part time supporters in their seats though after the restart. I was in section 112 and it was full the entire time!

Hi, Jonathan. I’ve lived in Seattle since after college, but have been a long-distance Galaxy fan since before there was even a hint that Seattle might get a team. I swapped blogs a couple of months ago.
Still love the Galaxy when they play any team but Seattle. Have to say, though, that after being an LA fan, the Seattle front office decisions seem so…so…sane.
Thanks for reading!

Laurie, no offence but Qwest field is a poor excuse for a football ground. I understand it was never designed for football but the atmosphere definitely isn’t that great from what I’ve seen. The fans are so far away from the pitch the intimidation factor is zero.

Er, the fans are like 10 feet from the pitch. There is room for the bench and that is about it.
Besides, what does intimidation have to do with it? Personally, I go to the games to support the Sounders, not to abuse the opposing team. In Seattle, we dont pour beer on people – we are far too polite! Dont get me wrong, there is some heckling – but it usually amounts to a round of “your not very good” or something.
In my section (CH134), there are lots of families, we all sing and clap – the kids get into it as well as the adults. Hell, there are even teenagers making fools out of themselves. Our section is completely sold out and we all have a great time.
The atmosphere definitely is great!

Good Stuff Laurie… I missed that stuff was thrown at Ljungberg.

Fans “are so far away”, eh?

Well Johonna I can see how you relate the atmosphere to a family night out. Have you ever been to any European match by any chance? Not exactly the same thing.
I guess living in Europe for most of my life and having been to many games that’s what I tend to try and compare the MLS to not realizing it’s no where near.
Keep up the good support, I guess that’s all we can expect here, across the pond.

Nothing like subtle arrogance to liven up a conversation.

Yep. I have been to a few in Italy. There were also many families in the stands – even in the Curva (or Ultras Section). Granted, the games were not derbies, but the violence that was once associated with those games is being systematically stamped out.
Frankly, I dont consider flares in the stands or bottles being thrown on the pitch as “good support.” I dont want the kind of violence that has historically been associates with Italian Ultras to find its way here – the US has enough problems as it is.
Now, if we could figure out some good choreography and some witty banners, that would be GREAT.

Oh no, I don’t want violence either, that’s the last thing I’m suggesting. I just think the lack of football knowledge in general I tend to notice is pretty funny. I hear all kinds of crazy stuff being shouted out from the stands, it’s more entertaining than the match sometimes.
I was suggesting more along the lines of what you mentioned, some banners and chants, because not only Seattle, but all over the league they are poor. I guess those kind of things will come with time.

To Mike’s “far away” photo I would like to add this one:

I guess I would just like to suggest that Anthony has a lack of knowledge about Seattle Sounders FC, Qwest Field, Sounders fans in general and everything else related to this club.
How do you come on here and make a ridiculous statement that you obviously know nothing about? And then, after your ridiculous statement is corrected, proceed to insult the Seattle fans football IQ? Sure not every fan is knowledgable, but you’ll get that anywhere. The fact is that a large majority of the fans at Sounders games have played the sport and know it quite well.
And our banners and flags are poor? Did you not see this either? http://www.weareecs.com/ecs_photos/2009_ecs_photos/20090319/IMG_0102.JPG
Go watch your games on television. I’m sure the atmosphere in your living room is great.

I was sitting in the first row for the Brazil friendly and I swear I got sweat on me.
My Sounders seats are in row J (you do the math) and I feel plenty close enough.

jz, one of the things I do think is missing from Sounders games is an away fans section. It is always nice to have someone to show off too.
And yes, opening day choreography was GREAT! Kudos to Emerald City.

Anthony, I would also add / question how the best home field advantage in the NFL wouldn’t translate to a raucous footy atmosphere? That place is LOUD. I’m no expert on how NFL crowd reactions (yelling really really loudly) translate to footy support (chants, songs, cheering) but I would be surprised if there’s more than a couple other MLS parks with such noise.

Johanna–I’ve actually thought about that. Although I don’t expect large contingents of away fans at most games (Seattle is geographically isolated), it would be nice if they had their own section. And when Vancouver and Portland start playing, there will probably be several thousand away fans for those games.

Anthony, what- no more snide comments?

Nothing is better then pseudo European arrogance! The best part is when people like Anthony believe using said arrogance will make up for their lack of facts or logic.
Quest was actually built with the purpose of both soccer and American football in mind. It was often referenced during its conception that they wanted to house major soccer events, and have done so with regularity since.
The fans are right on top of the field, and it contains noise better then any stadium in North America, and perhaps the world.
Also, Seattle fans are very knowledgeable; just visit any of the soccer/football bars scattered throughout the city to find out for yourself. But don’t drop your arrogance then, you might get put in your rightful place if you do! Also Anthony, you don’t have to reside on a dingy island, or hail to a queen, to know about the sport of soccer/football.
Yeah, the MLS is not up to the standard of the EPL, tell us something we don’t know you jack ass! But the MLS has gotten to where it is in only 13 seasons, check back in a 100 years to see how clubs like Seattle are doing before you begin to compare please.
I love my city, I love my club, I love my league, and no amount of chatter from a pompous ass like you will change any of that.
Peace from the 206
