Bring It On, Columbus!

By: Laurie | March 1st, 2009

Tomorrow is roster compliance day, meaning that we’re going to be seeing some cuts. Will somebody please sneak into Sigi’s room tonight and whisper, “Keep Levesque! Keep Levesque!”

I’d do it myself, but my attorneys took a look at the wording on the restraining order and advised against it.**

In the meantime, to take our mind of these things, I’d like to bring your attention to a little something discovered by Josh over at The Beautiful Game, found on a Crew Supporters’ Board:

I and a few friends of mine are of the opinion that Seattle Sounders FC sucks for a lot of reasons.

Not so much the Sigi thing, but the fact that you have these weak supporters out there in Seattle who couldn’t support their club in USL, but then you get a comedian, a Microsoft trillionaire and a producer together to buy them a club and now they are going to fill half an NFL stadium with latte sipping soccer moms to watch an underwear model in a neon kit run around on plastic grass to the tune of Gary Glitter played by a f’in marching band.

Seattle has no soul and it’s not what ultras culture in North America should be about . . . in our opinion.

Three options:

1) Wow. Losing a coach has made somebody very cranky –OR–

2) All that money and attention flowing our way is enough to make some people a wee bit jealous,
–OR–

3) This was written by a Timbers fan masquerading as a Crew Supporter

What do you think?

** You know, I really shouldn’t even joke about these things. Combine them with the groin injury humor and my penchant for posting photos of players in their underwear, and someday it will come back to bite me.

Any team with an NASL name is better then any MLS team before they even play a game. We need to get the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS and add an expansion team in San Diego called the Sockers. Then I might start watching.

Its ok, Laurie we know you’re cool with us. That pic has been making the rounds since we were sent it. And blogging by its very nature borrows from other blogs, news sources, etc. Its all part of the game.

If you were to go to the original source, instead of taking a third hand copy of something that another site took out of context in order to try and stir up some controversy, you’d discover that, in fact, that WAS written by a Timbers fan, a guy who had some anti-Seattle scarfs made up and was trying to sell them.

But why let something like facts stand in the way of a good snark about the league champions being jealous of an expansion team. As for Sigi, he’s a hired gun, everyone knew that, he left to be closer to his wife and family and nobody – absolutely nobody – is upset about it.

I just lost a good deal of the respect I once had for you, Laurie. You took a lie which originated on the most disreputable site in the soccer blogosphere and perpetuated it because it boosts your ego to think that fans in Columbus give a damn about some team that hasn’t even kicked a ball yet.

I thought you had more brains, and certainly more integrity, than that.

Hey Bill, “most disreputable site in the soccer blogosphere?” really?

IF that were the case why do you think we are so widely read?

    According to Quantcast web statistics…

There are people at Goal.com, Tribal Football, SI and ESPN who regularly read us and have even quoted our stories.

Could it be because people like rumors? Could it also be that most people know that rumors are things that are well, rumored…..

And could it also be because we broke stories like:

Seattle trademarking 3 fairly lame names (which lead to the outcry for a write in choice?)

    http://www.mls-rumors.net/2008/03/expansion-seattle-name-will-be-either.html

Or the precise series of events that would lead up to an official Philadelphia expansion announcement nearly two weeks prior to it and a week before mainstream media confirmed it?

    http://www.mls-rumors.net/2008/02/expansion-philadelphia-mls-announcement.html

Or maybe it was the rumor that Ruud Gullit would be leaving the Galaxy to go back to Europe, well before that happened:

    http://www.mls-rumors.net/2008/08/outgoing-ruud-on-move.html

Or perhaps the whole David Beckham to AC Milan rumor which some discounted before the mainstream press confirmed it over a week later?

    http://www.mls-rumors.net/2008/10/outgoing-david-beckham-on-loan-to-ac.html

We could go on but we don’t have to. You get the point.

And leave Laurie alone. She does good work and has for years. She and anyone who blogs successfully needs to read the following, especially point number 4:

Oh! Look! I just added a photo of cheerleaders in short skirts to the post to cheer people up and defuse the controversy!

In all seriousness, there are a lot of issues here that I think will be best covered in another post rather than in the comments. Stay tuned — I’ll try to get something up later today.
