Freddie Speaks About Toronto Fans

By: Laurie | April 6th, 2009

What did Freddie Ljungberg have to say about the atmosphere at BMO Field on Saturday? The Globe and Mail has some thoughts:

The Sounders are a welcomed addition to Major League Soccer and so is Freddie Ljungberg, who scored the Sounders’ first goal and provided what few minutes of quality there was on the pitch. “I thought the atmosphere was great,” said Ljungberg, the Swedish international who has played at Arsenal and who said he didn’t mind the odd beer shower. “When I came off the pitch, some of them [fans] were yelling ‘You’re better than Beckham! Stay!’ They were not — how do you say? — arseholes there.”

They were not — how do you say? — arseholes there.

High praise indeed.

“provided what few minutes of quality there was on the pitch”

That line bothers me. Apparently the writer missed the beatdown the Sounders placed on RBNY WITHOUT him. I guess that game was just rubbish though.

We’re still 3rd on ESPN’s “Power Rankings” with Chicago still in first, above two undefeated teams. I can accept Chivas above us (kind of), but even Ives ranked us higher!

it would be nice if ESPN would wake up and smell the rave green.

ESPN is obviously clueless. What part of “three shutouts” do they not understand?

I’d say its based on the way Chicago has won. They came back from deficits the first two games on the road, and then scored and won while being down a man for 75 minutes. They’ve also done it without Blanco or Rolfe being starters.

Of course the Sounders have been great, but I’d still put them at #2 (or perhaps a tie for #1). Head to head, I think Chicago draws Seattle in Seattle (probably 0-0 at that), and eeks out a 1-0 win in Chicago. Those are easily the MLS games of the year IMHO.

I think he was trying to be complimentary. Cynical much?

Oh, I know he was trying to be complimentary. I just thought it was a funny way to say it.

I’m not cynical. I mean, see my tags? The ones I created for this post? They say, right there in black and white (or maybe more like blue): “Toronto fans are not arseholes.”

And I mean that in just as complimentary a way as Freddie did. :-p

The part I quoted was the writer of the piece, not Freddie. I agree that Freddie was complimenting MLS. The writer on the other hand is taking the typical European position and claiming we’re a garbage league for out-of-shape footballers and rookies not ready for Europe.

    Gotcha, Adam.

Yes, the journalist’s compliment was definitely backhanded to everybody on the Seattle team but Freddie.

Would it be a) terribly shallow and b) a few years too late, if I pick Seattle to be my MLS team purely because a) I oddly like that shirt even though deep down I know there is something not right with that and b)I loved Freddie as a kid and even dyed a red stripe in my hair in homage?

Rob, we live to hear confessions like this.

I’m not going to be too quick to welcome you to the fold, though. I’m thinking that first we need a photo of you with the red stripe.
