Kit Rumors

By: Steve | May 27th, 2008

So I am sure anyone out there that is interested in the Sounders FC has heard something about the kit leak by this time.

Unfortunately I had a rough and busy day at work culminating, mercifully, in my boss buying me a whiskey on the rocks at the local Irish Pub.

Anyways, here is the supposed Seattle Sounders FC kit that was supposedly leaked (by who or what, no one seems to have any idea) earlier today.

Leaked Kit

Well, the first thing I must say is that I hope to god this is not the real kit. It is an ugly color, stupidly simple and looks like something less from a professional league and more from one of my childhood club soccer teams. My high school had nicer jerseys than that and we were a private school that played in single A.

If this is the kit, we are only living up to the stupid idea that Seattle has a “trend” of teams with ugly jerseys. A theme made popular by ignorant East Coasters who have nothing else to say about a team like the Seahawks (since they know nothing else about them and are mostly ignorant about Seattle sports).

As some of you might have also heard, the jerseys supposedly will be sponsored by Jones Soda. If you have never heard of it, I do not blame you.

Jones Soda??? JONES SODA??!??!!? Wtf? Are they taking out a loan to sponsor the jersey? Aren’t they hovering inches above declaring bankruptcy? I really cannot believe that a soft drink that is only consumed by high school kids, hipsters and skateboarders will grace the front of the jersey.

According to my good buddy GOALSEATTLE.COM, that is in fact the jersey… sighhhhh.
However, I am just gonna go ahead and call BS on the soda thing.

If I sound angry right now, it is because I am. That kit is hideous and makes me think only of vomit. Please don’t be it.

    Guess what? That’s it!

That very photo will appear in Seattle Times ads starting Thursday. The photographer of the photo posted it in her blog (duh!) and once Google grabbed it it was off to the races. Then she contacted as many webbies as she could to try and convince us to take the photo down. Why? She was called by the VP of Marketing for the club and told she had violated the confidentiality rules of her contract. Oops.
Let’s wait and see the ‘whole thing’ in action, though. Just a few hours away now…

PS: Jones Soda is making their move (again):

They already are the official soda of Qwest & the Seahawks.

However, I think it is something else. Today the club is playing up the “GLOBAL” aspect:

you’re gonna complain about Jones Soda being a sponsor? what about Xango??? they seem to be having no troubles at all (at least I haven’t heard anything yet). Jones Soda is at least a marketable product and what better fans to sell soccer to than younger ones? anyway, I disagree with this author’s assessment. No green in this league, and not enough sponsors like Jones Soda. Cmon, VW & DC ain’t enough for you? (and herbalife?, lol you really can’t talk smack about Jones)

Or they could have just kept the current shirts. You know, the ones the Sounders wear. What are your thoughts on the match in Cary tonight?

Actually, the Wall Street Journal reported today that Microsoft will be the jersey sponsor, paying $4 million per season over 5 seasons to put “XBOX 360 LIVE” on the front of Sounders FC jerseys. Read about it at soccerbyives.net

I will have to hold judgment until I see a better picture. Does the goofy shimmery bit go all the way down or is it just a band? Cause it sort of looks like something a deer hunter would wear. Maybe it will confuse the opposing team, sort of like a school of fish or something =0)

Call me old-fashioned, but I think the kit is just pure kookiness. I will take some nice stripes over this any day. Oh well. At least we get a team.
