“Light Rain,” Male Bonding, Ricardo Salazar and Other Rave Green Thoughts That Kept Me Awake Last Night

By: Laurie | October 29th, 2009

insomnia The early morning thoughts of a sleepless fan on a pregame night:

So why did I print my playoff tickets out as soon as I had the option? If I’d waited, Sigi and Kasey would have personally called my house to remind me. Well, okay, robo-called. But still…

Checked the hourly forecast. Light rain, light rain, light rain… And then at 10 p.m., showers. Good thing ESPN scheduled the game early. Except…wait. Am I sure that “light rain” is less than “showers”? Would I know this if I’d grown up here? Do they teach the rain spectrum in Washington schools? How far are “showers” on the road between “misty drizzle” and “thunderous downpour”? I am so confused.

Wonder how Houston will deal with the light rain. Or showers. And speaking of Houston, have Landin and Chingy figured out the bonding thing? They’re taking a long time to click. Maybe they should go camping. Well, AFTER the playoffs. Obviously.

Glad OUR forwards are bonding. Freddie’s peaking at just the right time, and he plays so much better up top. Fredy needs a home goal. He also needs to lay off the diving, especially with Salazar reffing. Hands AWAY from the face, Fredy! Don’t touch the face! Maybe he should douse his hands in Beckham’s “Instinct for Men” as a reminder.

Wow. That would be a GREAT way to get more space to maneuver. Maybe all our attacking players should do that. Wonder if I could get a message to Sigi.

Glad Salazar’s reffing, though. Love Ricardo Salazar. He’s definitely my second-favorite referee, right behind Alex Prus. Wait, did I say second-favorite? I meant FAVORITE, Ricardo! Absolutely my favorite! NOBODY signals advantage quite like you! And your whistling technique? Second to none. No, really. I mean that.

Wow. It’s really raining. Or showering. Or…

Crap. These guys better win.

LOL. This is some of your best work. I’ll bet its the NyQuil that you probably overdosed on, but whatever… this is gold.

Hey Laurie, I think you’re right that the degrees of rainfall are not something that can be taught. As a native, I implicitly understand that mist is less intense than sprinkle, which is less intense than drizzle, which is less intense than very light rain, which is less intense than light rain, which is less intense, but perhaps steadier, than showers, which are less intense than moderate rain, which is less intense than steady rain, which is less intense than heavy rain, which is less intense than torrential rain, which is less intense than EXTREME (real meteorological term!) rain.

Dave, thank you. It helps when your brain already operates in a stream-of-consciousness state.

Brian, that’s what I thought. Maybe I should’ve awakened one of my kids and asked them?

And ABT? You have already said too much. :-D

My understanding was always that “showers” is more of a time and place descriptor than an intensity descriptor. A Google search on light rain vs showers seems to bear that out. Showers refer to precipitation that is sporadically distributed and short in duration (an hour or less) whereas rain is more widely distributed and usually lasts longer (several hours). As previously mentioned, showers can be of any intensity, so if you’re under a light rain, it’s not necessarily more or less intense than a shower.

Do you still like Salazar? From where I was sitting in the north end, Salazar appeared to have a terrible game. In fact, I would say it was equal to the worst refereeing I saw all year.

    Very frustrating.

Ryan, I’m waiting to re-watch the game, but right now I’m tending to agree with you. The reason I’m hesitant is that there were several tall people in front of me and my view of the field was blocked for several of the keys calls, like the Onstad-Montero dustup, Jaqua’s head thing, and whatever it was that caused the upfield whistle that made the “goal” not count. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

    P.S. I love Tivo.

it was the Salazar show tonight, but we should have done better with the chances we had. He made himself the star of the night, which MLS referees seem to love to do, but I dont think his calls really influenced the result, just more spotty finishing from the Sounders and a couple bad breaks.

Onstad should have gotten a yellow, Montero received maybe the most undeserved yellow I have seen ever in literally any soccer game ever, period. I mean come on… a very large man pushed a smaller man and the smaller man fell. Some referees might have even tossed Onstad. Meh. We still should have won.

BTW, the ESPN commentary was sort of funny… one call after another, it was “hmm… I’m not sure…”, or “well…”.

DaveS don’t call people morons, you might prove to be one.

Steve, Onstad received a yellow for bumping Montero. Montero received a yellow for embellishing the little chest bump and then folding his legs. It was correct, if you want to stop diving…if not than we’ll be South America one day.

Is it a “dive” if you just got tackled? Honestly, the embellishment wasn’t that bad. It was the most convincing fall I’ve ever seen from Montero, which says a lot. :-) Which leads to the next point… if that was anyone but Montero, Onstad doesn’t get away with it I think.

And sorry, Dustin, I disagree. Salazar looked like he didn’t have a clue what was going on much of the time last night. And the linesmen missed some very clear calls too.

No, clear in person, from above the walkway. They were really, really bad last night. I wouldn’t be saying that based on a TV viewing experience.

If it was obvious to ME that Jaqua was onside (which TV verified later) and that Houston was given a goal kick when Seattle should have had a corner (which TV verified later), then there is no excuse for experienced officials in position on the touchline to miss those calls.

Dude, I get it, refereeing is hard. That doesn’t excuse what was widely agreed to be an awful performance last night.

    Ahh… girl.. girl..
Salazar one of your favorites? even before this? LOL
This league still looks weak more often than not, some say it is making progress, could be; but if guys like Salazar keep allowing the untalented bulk athletes, who never got a chance anywhere else, to chop out the beautiful game, that the talented ones are trying to practice, we will keep being excited about nothing, until CONCACAF comes, we play the mexican league teams, and get back down to this mediocre reality.
Soccer is partly an art, not 100% a stupid workout in public

George, I see this as a lot more gray.

Salazar leans toward “let them play.” There are a lot of instances where this is a good thing. I’m thinking specifically with teams like Columbus that cynically rely on scoring from free kicks and penalties and go down at the most innocuous touch. If somebody like Alejandro Moreno or Cuauhtemoc Blanco is playing, I want a ref like Ricardo Salazar. Heck, even Montero pretty much cleans up his act when Salazar is reffing.

Where I have problems with Salazar are in games like Thursday’s, when one team decides to come out and play hack-a-player on the assumption that Salazar won’t do anything. When one team outfouls the other 3-1 (as happened Thursday), yet the card count is even, there’s something seriously wrong. Salazar doesn’t try for the correct balance in these situations.

    He should.

My house got broken into this weekend, and I blame you Laurie. Among other things taken (our cat’s ASHES. No, really), they took the David Beckham cologne I got my son for Christmas last year. As a joke.

Oh, H, that’s awful. (It’s good that you can joke about it, but breakins are really traumatic. We’ve only had our cars broken into, and even so it feels like a huge violation.)

That said, though, do we know what Fredy was doing at the time in question? Maybe he has an Beckham cologne addiction he needs to feed!

    I’ve created a monster.

You said it right Laurie, thanks; but, I would take one corner goal, or one free kick goal a hundred times, over a scoreless tie helped by a referee who let the dogs out…

Hmmm. Chris Eylander’s car was reportedly recently stolen while he was in training recently…if my cat’s ashes and the Beckham cologne turn up in his car, I am TOTALLY going to suspect Montero.
