Montero Gets Called Up for Colombia. Which Basically Sucks.

By: Laurie | July 30th, 2009

Boys and girls, I have some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is that Fredy Montero has been called up for Colombia and will miss some games.

The good news is… Um… Hold on a sec. Thinking…thinking…

Okay, screw it, I lied. When you’re an MLS team, there is no good news when it comes to international callups. We don’t recognize FIFA international dates, so we play our games without our star players. The end.

Okay, sure, having a full-fledged international ups a team’s (and a league’s) prestige, and theoretically ups the price the team/league will get when kids like Montero finally do leave. And that’s something, right?

(So…yeah. Red Bulls. How’re all those Jozy Altidore bucks working out for ya?)

Using my poquito amount of ability to speak espanol (okay, plus a lot of Google Translate), it seems that Fredy’s required to report on August 2 and will be called up for the game on the 7th, thus missing the San Jose game and the Barcelona game, and probably the RSL game as well. He doesn’t seem to be called up for the game on the 12th, but that feels kind of sketchy, given that there are only 12 players listed for that game. (Steve, oh speaker-of-Spanish, am I missing something?)

So for the San Jose (and possibly RSL) game we’ll be missing both the Freds? This is not good. I thought we had a quota we had to fill.

Hey, what’s Adu doing this weekend?

Good old US of A, we do things our way, screw FIFA. Does anyone know the reason we don’t recognize their dates? I’m sure I’ve seen a reason somewhere.

Reasons start with Seattle in Dec-Feb is a mighty cold place to play. Snow on the pitch is a bad thing – many teams would thus need covered stadiums, and it would impact my snowboarding in a bad way :-p.

I like the non-Fifa schedule – it’s a great excuse to allow for more heads on a team – to accommodate these call-ups. Le Toux will start, Jaqua will have more pressure to put up numbers, and we will survive if not thrive.

I’m pissed about him missing Barca more than anything – although hiding him from a team from a Spanish speaking country may be in our best interest!

i think montero will be back for rsl. he’s not listed for for the aug 12th match for columbia, and to be completely honest, i’ll be surprised if he starts the aug 7th match. if they need someone on the 12th, i highly doubt it’ll be montero. so he should be good to go against rsl on the 8th, like busch was with chicago against us. and also, ljungberg will be back on the 8th, migranes permitting, as he is suspended only for a straight up red card. his yellow card accumilation is still at 4.

oh, and i couldn’t care less about barca. i hope we start all reserves. we have league matches that are faaaaaar more important. we need to arrange these friendlies to weeks were we don’t have a match. or the offseason.

So doesn’t this also help satisfy English work visa requirements for any potential hypothetical move to the EPL? It just feels strange a week after hearing about the Fulham rumors, and speculation that he didn’t have enough international matches with Columbia…

Of course, I don’t even know if any of that visa requirement talk was actually true, and they denied talking, but still.

hey might be gone a lot more as Colombia has a series of extremely crucial qualifiers coming up and its not looking good for South Africa. They have to almost win out and get lucky and I think this is an audition to look for someone who can help them do just that… Congratulations to Montero… this is not his first and wont be his last call up and could lead to a few more caps in mid-late August. It would hurt the Sounders, but there is pretty much nothing to be done about it and we should get used to it, since he probably won’t be here next year unless we are lucky.

Also, Dustin, keep in mind that the Chilean, Brazilian, Argentinian… etc… leagues are also running right now it is not like we are the only ones giving the middle finger to FIFA.
