Our Kingdom for a Centerback. Oh, and a Goal Scorer. (OR: Here Comes the Open Cup Final)

By: Laurie | September 1st, 2009

Jhon Kennedy Hurtado: Suspended.
Tyrone Marshall: Hamstring injury, will not play.
Taylor Graham: Ankle tendon injury, not expected to play.

So that leaves…uh…Ianni and whoever else can be drafted to play at Central Defense.

What do you think? Tyson Wahl? Leo Gonzalez? Zach Scott? Pete Vagenas?

Combine this with our inability to score lately and this scares the [insert word of your choice here] out of me. Even our experienced defenders have been having a hard time dealing with adjusting to how much Leo goes forward, leading to a lot of panic runs back on counterattacks. The only reason we haven’t done worse defensively these last couple of weeks is that our opponents forgot their shooting boots too.

(Anybody search Lost and Found recently? I’m guessing there are a whole bunch of shooting boots there. You’d probably find ours, and Toronto’s and Houston’s…. If we could quickly and quietly ship them out to DC, we’d win for sure.)

But anyhoo. I don’t even want to speculate on a potential lineup, because I’ll just scare myself.

So I’ll let YOU speculate on a lineup. Two questions: 1) Who do you think will start? and 2) Who would you LIKE to start?

Game’s at 4:30 Pacific on Fox Soccer Channel. Question for anybody: We’ll be at the hospital for a long day of chemo tomorrow and I don’t think they have FSC. But my son will have a good computer connection. Any ideas for streaming?

(Also, I hadn’t realized the team will get a minimum of $50,000 for this game. $100,000 if they win. How much of this goes to the boys?)

(Also #2, for Dustin. What does Ref. Mark Geiger mean for the game?)

Heeeee’s new….for all I know. He seems to be quite timid, from what I remember, but I really feel unprepared to prejudge him because I just haven’t watched too many games of his. In the deep recesses of my mind though, I have the feeling his timid, and lets stuff go more because he just isn’t brave enough to take a stand, or it’s just his style. We’ll have to see though.

If this game were played a week after the semifinal, I’d be almost positive we’d win. Now, I’m filled with an sense of dread and foreboding. I just feel totally doomed.

Oh, and don’t forget… we only get 5 non-US citizen players on our roster. So with Hurtado and Marshall out, is it Gonzalez, Ljungberg, Montero, Zakuani, Le Toux, or Nyassi? Am I missing anyone else? I think Alonso is considered US since he defected, thankfully!

Download TVU Player. It is available for both Windows and Mac and has a channel called “soccer” under the sports section that is a 24 hour stream of FSC. That’s how I’ll be watching the big match.

With the CB situation the way it is I would play a 4-3-3 with the midfield consisting of two holding/defensive minded midfielders. More a 4-2-1-3:
    ———–Keller————
    Riley—–Ianni—Scott—–Leo
    —–Evans—–Alonso——
    ———-Freddie———–
    —Montero———-Zak—–
    ———-Jacqua————

With Evans and Alonso infront of Zach Scott, the center of the defense will be in better shape to handle DC’s 5 man midfield. However, Sigi will probably stick with his 4-4-2 and keep Ljuenberg on the right side of midfield.

Wicks has had a great first half. You guys are pressuring DC well. You’d think there has to be a goal before regulation is over.

Great win for Sounders FC! To go into the oppositions stadium and bring home a cup is just about all you can ask for. The team played wonderful despite the absence of the centre-backs. Alonso was all over the field, the ankle attacking cobra every midfield needs. Leo and Riley cleaned up the perimeter well, and from there the counter attack flourished. Le Toux was a splended change from Jacqua. His midfield presence and ability to back tackle let the Freds get forward. It was the Sounders FC I had been waiting to see.

If it weren’t for Wicks’ stonewall footwork, Seattle would have lit up the DC scoreboard even more. Too bad Wicks had to turn into a complete asshole. Yeah you spilled the save right into Montero’s feet. Yeah Freddy probably talks a lot of shit and you two had been going at it all game. But jumping on a player is never called for. Then, after he was red carded, to try and intimidate the officals who sent you off. Asshole.

Too bad such an ugly incident had to mare the match. Wait, no its great. Sounders FC take the silverware and DC looks foolish. Love it. Lets hope this gives the boys a boost towards qualifying for the playoffs. Because this Open Cup showed what this Seattle side can do in a knockout format. MLS Cup you next.
