Poll on The Forward Dilemma: Who to Start Up Top Against Dallas

By: Laurie | May 12th, 2009

Okay, moving forward. FC Dallas. The Hoops. Remember these guys from US Open Cup, 2007? I have been none-too-fond of this team ever since that night. Not because they beat Seattle, but because of the way they did it. (Speaking of cards that should have been awarded for diving and time wasting.)

(Oh, wait. We’re moving on from LA.)

So we have several options up top. Start Nate Jaqua with Fredy Montero like the early season. Start Jaqua with Sebastien Le Toux like Sunday. Start Le Toux with Montero. Or somehow insert Jarrod Smith into the mix. Or… [fill in the blank.]

There are some issues that I think would come up with Jarrod Smith. First, I think he may be reinjured. (Anybody? I think I read a tweaked hamstring last week?) Second, I’m not exactly sure how he gets on the roster, given that we have too many senior players.

The rules allow for 24 players, which is what we have, but four of those players have to be developmental, i.e. paid a developmental salary of $20,100 and be under 25, like Sanna Nyassi, or be Generation Adidas, like Steve Zakuani. Smith is 24 and listed as making $37,800. And MLS rules say that putting somebody else with a short-term injury on injured reserve to make room isn’t an option unless we want to plan on him being out for at least six weeks.

I have to say, the Seattle roster has been a mystery to me all year long, given that we have 24 players and only two listed as developmental — Nyassi and Zakuani. Can somebody explain this to me? Do we have another player in injured reserve? Pete Vagenas, maybe? (And is there an official listing of injured reserve players somewhere that I’ve missed?) And what’s the plan for the long term? That we’ll always have two players injured? Or are we demoting a couple of senior players?

I wasn’t at the Open Cup match, so I haven’t seen Jarrod Smith play, but those who were there seem to have come away impressed. Is he a starter? Or should we go with the known?

Tell us with your vote in the poll. (And if you said “other,” tell us what you’d like to see in the comments.)

The MLS version of Seattle’s roster (http://web.mlsnet.com/players/index.jsp?club=t260) now seems to list Evan Brown as developmental, along with Steve Zakuani, Sanna Nyassi, and Kevin Forrest. Previously, Brown had not been listed as developmental. That seems to make space for Jarrod Smith to be activated if he is healthy and the coach wants him active for a match. Nyassi and Brown both make about $34k, which seems to be the limit for developmental. The MLS rules say that a developmental player cannot have a guaranteed contract except for Generation adidas players like Zakuani.

I said Montero and Le Toux. I know many people like what Jaqua has been doing, and I definitely see him working hard most of the time. But I just don’t think we’re getting what we need out of him, namely goals. Le Toux’s not exactly short (six feet even, according to the team site), so we’re not giving up a huge amount there. In my opinion, Le Toux has a big edge in both speed and workrate over Jaqua, so I think he’s a net plus overall. If Montero can get back to his earlier form, and if the camping trip worked in getting him to pass the ball, then I think that combo could be much more effective than the Jaqua-Montero pairing has been recently.

Ron, thanks for the link. It didn’t occur to me that the MLSnet roster wouldn’t match up to the official website, but the MLSnet roster would put us in compliance. Evan Brown is listed as Developmental, as you said, and Kevin Forrest is listed as a Senior Developmental.

But I could have sworn I read that now that we’re down to four developmentals, there was no differentiation between seniors and juniors anymore.

Maybe I’m just going insane. There is that possibility.

I’ve seen Nate Jaqua score some great goals in the past….where has that gone? I’m voting for him because I wanna see him get over his yips.

Dustin, was that when he was in Houston? Because what I’m seeing is just what I saw in LA. But he seemed to do a lot better in Houston.

Laurie now I’m all confused. I don’t remember if it was in Houston or not. However I remembered how fast Steve Zakuani seemed last game, he could really be dangerous, at least in drawing defenders to him.

I just Wiki’ed him. Maybe it was Chicago? 03-06, 92 games, 21 goals? That would be nice, yeah?
