Post-Game Thoughts/Discussion
By: Steve | July 11th, 2009So what did everyone think of the game? Let us know.
A few quick points/observations:
- Seattle should have won this game. Houston was down 8 players and when that is the case, you have to take the points. Mission accomplished in that case.
- Seattle played some very dominant soccer the second half and it started in the midfield with possession and focus. A great job by Sounders players not to get sucked in to a shoving battle.
- Waibel hitting Ljungberg in the head was one of the most pathetic/funny things I have seen in the MLS. Props to him for giving us a talking point for the next week.
- Houston’s second string of defenders are pretty good all thigns considered. Julius James was very impressive with his speed and tackling.
- Alonso needs to get healthy.

Waibel is a jackass who should have been sent off.
And Montero has gone completely the other way: he used to be too greedy with the ball and now he doesn’t take the shot when he should. If we ever find his happy medium, we will be in goal-heaven.

- I’m starting to love Iannni. I wish we had three of him for central midfield and central defense.

(Edit: Was Ianni responsible for the Houston goal? I couldn’t see from where I was sitting.)

Edit#2. Just read the liveblog. Apparently I saw this game through Ianni-colored blinders, because he was making all his errors outside of my line of vision. I’m still thinking he’s our best non-starter, though. And that goal was exquisite.
I do wish we’d gotten a third, because that first one was…oh…how do I say this…? Controversial. Houston might be tempted to say they were robbed of a point or something.
Still, it’s nice to have a break go our way for a change.

Yeah I just watched it and it wasn’t a goal, it wasn’t even close. I don’t know what the Assistant was calling, but if you’re not sure then it’s not a goal, and I don’t see how he could’ve been sure.
Wouldn’t it be great if we had a referee, standing right next to the goal. He’d be 6 yards away to see that ball, and he would be the one to make the call. Don’t talk about technology, it breaks down and it’s a stupid hassle that’s expensive silly. Another referee to make calls for penalties when needed, and make those difficult calls that an assistant can’t make when he’s not yet at the endline and running his ass off trying to figure it out. A calm, ref standing still on the endline, perfect position, that’s what I want.

1) Yeah, Ianni made a couple of mistakes… didn’t clear leading to goal, later “cleared” across goal line for corner when he easily could have gotten up the sideline a bit… but that goal made up for it.
2) I watched on TV, and the play by play buy Arlo White was absolutely amazing! Who do we call to encourage them to pick him up more often?
3) Sounders always seem to have good things happen when they switch to their more aggressive tactics… those long through balls and quick attacks always create good opportunities for us. Sometimes I get frustrated that we don’t press like that more often.
4) Sometimes I get a vibe that Fredy/Freddie don’t like each other and that Montero lets it affect his judgement, but I may be making this up entirely. Is it just me?
5) The Starfire crowd giving hell to Waibel should be fun.

No excuses for the Dynamo. We got cheated, so what. The way I look at it, if Ianni scores on you, you deserve to lose. See you boys next wed. Don’t wear yourselves out vs Chelsea.

I was on the opposite end of the stadium and thought it was a brilliant save. Overall it was a great match. We should be playing better then that though as they had too many starters out to win like that.
