Seattle (insert lame team name here) after Henry
By: Steve | April 4th, 2008Despite lacking a team name, owners of the Seattle MLS franchise are looking well beyond the name announcement on Monday and to the 2009 inaugural season. Since here at the offside, we also lack the name, logos and colors, we are using the Arsenal template for the time being. Nothing could be more appropriate considering the rumors bouncing around this site, local sports radio and even appearing on the front page of the Seattle PI sports section. Thierry Henry, the ex-Arsenal dreamboat, the face of the Seattle franchise?
Mama always said that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. However, the man himself has expressed his desire to play in the US, “I would love to. It’s still early. Don’t get me wrong, I just love the U.S. I don’t know why. I love the way you live. I love American sports. For me, it’s a dream to go to training and then see a game of football, basketball, whatever game.” I love whatever games, too Henry. Maybe we can be friends.
I think we have to see how things unfold in Barcelona’s season and maybe hear from Henry (or more likely his agent) himself about a move to Seattle. The man obviously isn’t washed up, but is on the downside of his spectacular career. Say Barca walks away from the season without a single piece of hardware (god, would I cherish that). Does Henry take a Beckha-deal and head over the pond? It seems a bit early to me, but then again some could argue that Beckham made the jump a couple years earlier than expected.
How sweet would a Ronaldo, Henry striker partnership be the 1st season? There probably aren’t words to describe such a thing. There have already been 13,000 season ticket deposits. We would probably see that number double. I can tell you one thing, Roth and Allen definitely have the money to pull it off.

Love the new Seattle kit!

Hmmm, I truly underestimate the chances of a player of his class, Henry coming to the United States. He’s still on a team that has the chance to still win their league title and Champions League. The Seattle team focus should be on relegated doom Fulham who has plenty of known American talent.

yea, likin the henry caption too. he loves american sports but I wonder how he’ll take the news that the sonics may be leaving seattle. thierry is a big bball fan so he might not like that! maybe it can be kept a secret… along with the weather.

I like the idea of importing the American talent from Fulham, but I think for marketing purposes those two guys (Roth and Allen) want to bring a name that will attract crowds and add to the already impressive amount of Season Ticket deposits. Thanks for your comments though.

We won’t have a basketball team. Why would he come here?
I have to say, though, luring Thierry Henry for a year or two is the only good reason to keep the Sonics that I’ve heard.
(By which I mean, welcome! Yay, Seattle!)

While I won’t hold my breath about someone like Henry coming to Seattle I am cautiously optimistic. First he has enough left in the tank to be an utterly dominant goal scorer in MLS. A player like Henry could really put on some highlight reel displays and raise the profile of MLS. I don’t really like the idea of Americans coming back from Europe to play in MLS, frankly even on a team in the Coca-Cola Championship they’ll be facing better competition and raising their skill level for International Play, which at this point I think is more important. Getting European stars, even fading ones, will do more for MLS in terms of getting futbol fans interested in the domestic league.

professional photoshop
im putting the chances of this actually happening at very little, but it is nice to see them making some noise. good marketing scheme at the very least.
god i hate the name choices though…

I have no problem with the MLS becoming the pre-geriatric league for European players that can still play but just not at their former levels. Lets get Figo too!

Why he’s not coming:
1. Henry is not past his prime and can still dominate in Europe.
2. Seattle doesn’t need to prop itself up on one star and pin dreams of titles on his talent.
3. I would cry.
