Seattle Offside’s WTF Moment for the Week Year Millennium

By: Laurie | March 3rd, 2009

Man, did I ever step in it with this post. (The one that linked to and quoted from another blog about how much a supposed Crew supporter thinks Seattle sucks, which I actually thought was kind of humorous.)

Apparently not everybody agrees. That post led to this comment, which still has me scratching my head.

If you were to go to the original source, instead of taking a third hand copy of something that another site took out of context in order to try and stir up some controversy, you’d discover that, in fact, that WAS written by a Timbers fan, a guy who had some anti-Seattle scarfs made up and was trying to sell them.
But why let something like facts stand in the way of a good snark about the league champions being jealous of an expansion team. As for Sigi, he’s a hired gun, everyone knew that, he left to be closer to his wife and family and nobody – absolutely nobody – is upset about it.
I just lost a good deal of the respect I once had for you, Laurie. You took a lie which originated on the most disreputable site in the soccer blogosphere and perpetuated it because it boosts your ego to think that fans in Columbus give a damn about some team that hasn’t even kicked a ball yet.
I thought you had more brains, and certainly more integrity, than that

Whoa, dude. Who pissed in your cornflakes?

And for the record? If a post that innocuous caused you to lose all respect for me, you clearly have not been reading my stuff all that long. I believe I graduated with honors in “Creation of Offensive Content,” and that post didn’t even come close. (My one real regret about the Chelsea game is that Claude Makelele is no longer with the team, which means I can’t discuss this topic.)

(Oh, damn. I think I’ve just cost myself the nomination for PTA president.)

But fair enough. I probably should have gone to the original source. And now I have. And I would suggest that anybody reading this go there, too. And let me know if you have even the slightest clue what’s going on here. All I know is it’s ugly, and Seattle and their supporters are somehow caught in the crossfire before we’ve even done anything.

Some folks are still saying the original writer of the post on the Crew fan site was a Crew fan. Some (including the commenter above) are saying it’s a disgruntled Portland fan trying to sell the above scarves. (This argument is undercut by the fact that he/she seems to be giving away the scarves for free. But whatever. It’s entirely possible that somebody hates us enough to subsidize this kind of thing.)

For the record, I’ve liked the vast majority of Crew fans I’ve known, and also the vast majority of Portland fans. I was looking forward to a friendly, fun rivalry.

What I wasn’t expecting was this.

Anybody want to explain it to me?

(And also for the record, try as I might, I can’t work up any rancor against that “most disreputable site,” MLS Rumors. I wouldn’t bet my mother’s life on the stuff I read there,** but, y’know… It’s still kind of fun.)

**The life of my loonie sister-in-law, though? I’d think about it.

Think the rant from the other page is right, I´m not sure how Seattle really gets into soccer culture. Doesn´t seem right for it, and it doesn´t seem that the Northwest has a long soccer history.

Alessio, with all respect, what do you know about Seattle’s culture or history? Have you lived here recently, or have you just picked it up on TV and jokes?

The last twenty-five years have seen an explosion in immigration here. Seattle is hugely multicultural and very open to new things. With this multiculturalism and openness has come an appreciation for what others bring with them. That includes soccer.

So maybe soccer didn’t come with the Swedish and Norwegian immigrants. Neither did I. But it’s here now. Our local indoor arena shuts down for several days a year so Microsoft can hold its “World Cup” with players from all around the world. That’s the culture that’s here now.

The one thing people always bring up in saying things like this is that Seattle never supported its USL teams. That’s true, and sad, and I have no idea why that is. (It breaks my heart that so few people saw the USL cup winners in 2007.)

But what cities DO have strong USL support? Portland and…? Seattle in the USL years suffered from piss-poor marketing, piss-poor media coverage (competing with NFL, MLB and NBA at the time), and the lack of a Timber Jim figure to coalesce around. I’m not happy about it, but to say that this is the absolute end-all definition of Seattle’s “soccer culture” is grossly inaccurate.

This team has hit the perfect storm. NBA is out, and Seattle now has excellent marketing and leadership making very fan-centric decisions, and the people who have always wanted to be fans of a local soccer team are responding in droves.

And yet everybody is saying this somehow makes us a bad franchise? I beg to differ.

Not into the drama. I will never drink out of a beer can again and the scarves are tasteless.

Yeah, funny, huh? The level of drama is just so…not Seattle.

I never supported the USL team because for years, I didn’t know we had one. Then, when they won in 2007, there was some press coverage, but I thought the USL was like a semi-pro league, sort of college level sports. Not very appealing. Perhaps some better marketing would have seen me at a game.

Now, does that mean that Seattle wont support soccer? Hardly. I mean, the Sounders FC haven’t even played a game yet and I already see jerseys walking around town.

Laurie – we miss your updates on the Galaxy blog! Is there any room in Seattle for a fed-up Galaxy fan who’s sick of Beckham???

Colin, we’re very open and loving and affirming here in Seattle. We accept all. Even Galaxy fans. I’d be perfectly happy to lead a Recovery-from-Beckham group.

(I can’t BELIEVE they agreed to a loan through the Serie A season!!!!! That is so unfair to the team!)

It has been a tough week for MLS bloggers . . . sheesh.

I think part of the problem (and I feel unjustly) is that people HATE on MLS-Rumors. But what I dont get is if you go to mls RUMORS, why would you expect solid news and 100% accuracy? Isnt that the point of a Rumors site? (and this doesnt take into account the many times they are correct or even breaking a story)

As a wrestling fan since I was 4, I follow prowrestling.com. They have rumors up as news all the time that doesnt make it. But its the nature of their site.

MLS rumors is what it is. And a Blogger, even one as reputable, talented and informative as Laurie, can make mistakes and take a very legitimate looking post as gospel. It happens to the best of us – hell! I have a reader (Eugene) who CONSTANTLY lets me know if I am wrong on something. And I enjoy that, because he is never accusing or being wise for knowing better – he does it with good intent.

The fault here in lies with the assumption made by this emailer. He assumed Laurie was puposely perpetrating a lie. And that is a horrible assumption. If it were me, I think I would ask in my first email,” Hey Laurie. Did you know that . . . . blahblahblah.” Dont assume she knows. Again – BLOGGER, not REPORTER. Dont assume.

Anyway. I am tired. Im going to bed.

    Laurie rocks.

I knew I could count on you, Lucas. (To be honest, there is a part of me wondering if you were the one who made up the scarves.)
