“The Bluest Skies…”?!?!?! Sa-WING and a Miss!
By: Laurie | March 14th, 2009Seattle’s hit a lot of home runs with this team. Not sure this is one of them.
I forgot to save the holder-things that were wrapped around my season tickets when I got them, but they included words to some chants. (Which is fantastic. Active fans MAKE the game.)
But — and correct me if I’m wrong — wasn’t one of those chants/songs the “In Seattle” song? (Or whatever the hell the actual name is?)
As in… this one?!?!?!?!
Um…yeah. This one’s right up there with “Sounders Super Search.”

Yes, turning our backs on decades of history would be a good idea

Sorry, I’m not buying it. If history is our only deciding factor, we might as well dedicate a song to Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer.

Off base on this one Laurie. A loved show and a loved song in these parts. Perfect for the Sounders to re-adopt at this time. “Bluest skies, greenest green.” Couldn’t have written it better if we’d tried.

All righty. I won’t fight it anymore. You guys win. But I have NEVER liked this song.
(Actually, “never liked” is being kind. More like: BLEAH!! BLEAH!! Sauerkraut meets ipecac. Or…wait…that’s way too much flavor. More “unseasoned dry cream of wheat meets ipecac.”)
But I cave. I fold. I surrender to others’ feelings.
(Because that Bobby Sherman? He’s dreeeeeeeeamy!)
With luck, though, the marching band will jazz it up a bit. (For a taste of Seattle, though, I’d still prefer to hear the theme from Frasier. Or maybe some Nirvana.)

I personally absolutely hate this song. Would love to get a manly chant. HELP!

You’re just going to have to trust me on this one, but it sounds much, MUCH better when belted out accapella by a crowd of tone deaf drunks than when sung by some smarmy 70’s pop singer.

To support Billy Bob’s argument, I direct you to “The Fields of Anfield Road” on YouTube…

Now I love that song when the Kop is singing it, but this version…not so much.

Have any of you haters ever been to a game? this is not a chant, this is an anthem. It is not meant to be manly, but after a couple of drinks,
the ‘full of hopes, an’ full of fears, full of laughter, full of BEERS.’ comes out.
Yes, it is a song written about Seattle, albeit a 60s version of a tv western theme song, but it is OURS, we are not copying or bastardizing some European tradition from another team, this is our Anthem.

Whoa. I wasn’t aware that having a different opinion from the accepted one was a hanging offense in these here parts. Can I at least kiss my dog goodbye before you string me up?
I’ll tell you what, though. I promise to listen to the song at least once this season with an open mind after lots of beer. And I’ll tell you if it changes my opinion.
P.S. I’m actually kind of liking the idea of a chant/song about the PNW’s serial killers. Put a little healthy fear into the outsiders who dare venture into our territory.

P.S. Ed, your video made me laugh out loud.

Soundersfan nailed it. We’ll not be singing the whole damn song, just the chorus with BEERS replacing Tears. It will be a classic, instant tradition.

For all of you that are thinking, “where the hell is this song from originally anyways…?” The theme is from a 1968 show that latest 2 seasons called “Here Come the Brides”.
From IMDB.com:
“To avoid losing their logging crew, the Bolt brothers bring 100 prospective brides from Massachusetts to Seattle, using money borrowed from sawmill owner Stempel. Should one of the girls decide to go home, or should they fail to meet Stempel’s timber quotas, they will still lose their mountain to him. Written by Ed Stephan {stephan@cc.wwu.edu}
Brothers Jason, Joshua and Jeremy Bolt ran a logging camp in Seattle in 1870. Labor problems arose when their male workers, frustrated at the lack of women in the Seattle area, threatened to leave. With the aid of their rival Aaron Stempel, the Bolts recruit 100 women, or “brides”, to move to Seattle from the East. The hitch was that if any of the brides returned to the East within one year, Stempel would become the rightful owner of the Bolts’ mill. Needless to say, Stempel did everything possible to make life miserable for the women of Seattle.”
Reading the lyrics of the song makes me think this is barely more than a cry out for help for men who are desperately seeking female companionship.
PLEASE for those of you who are crafty enough to make up a few other chants, er, anthems… PLEASE add a few others to the book. I get that “it’s ours”. I do. If you disagree with me, please do me a huge favor and ask the non-USL Sounders what they think about that song, er, anthem first though before it ends up being sung, er, anthem’ed a few times during a game. I don’t know about you but this wouldn’t do anything to get me going during/before/after a game. We need more courses in this meal.
My girlfriend hates this song, er, anthem also. Regardless, we both will be singing it arm in arm with the rest of you lovers of it that find it endearing.
