The Photo Says it All

0-4. We’ve never WON by that much! How can we LOSE by that much!

So what can you say about a game like that? The ref put his stamp on things early, and the Sounders did the rest.

(Thanks to sempuukyaku for the photo find. It truly does say it all.)

Either Steve or I will be back later with more coherent thoughts. For now, I’m thinking a pitcher of margaritas might be in order.

EDIT:

Thought I’d come in and add the Comment of the Day from DaveS.

I love Sigi, but I have to question the coaching/preparation for this. It’s like we had NO IDEA what to expect in terms of the implications of the pitch dimensions. Every time Sounders touch the ball, they are mobbed; when San Jose touches the ball, our guys sit back and twiddle their thumbs.
I’m pretty frustrated right now.

I was watching this game and wondering why I felt such a sense of deja vu.

Oh, right. US-Mexico last week. :-(

Watched the game back and forth on I think 2 TeleFutura channnels tonight.
Unfortunately, I can’t point to the minute/segundo mark, but the español commentary was quite excited once Sigi looked to be picking his shnoz.

I watched the play and I was fully expecting it to be definitive in some way. I just can’t tell though, I think I can see what most people were talking about when they say he embellished. What the player who was fouled did was jump to avoid it or let off his legs so he wouldn’t have them firm on the ground if he got hit. It’s a good strategy, Beckham did it awhile back and talked about it, and it has the added bonus of making fouls look worse than they actually are.

To be hard on the referee, I think he could’ve gotten away with giving Riley a yellow card, which it at least certainly was. To be hard on Riley, it was a sloppy challenge and any challenge cleats up is inviting punishment.

I must stress though that even watching multiple replays I have several doubts, and I would also like to mention that the referee was right on top of the play (in fact standing in the way of the camera at the time of contact if there was any).

Law 12 Decision 4: A tackle, which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Referees decision, however I probably couldn’t gotten away with a Yellow Card here, it just depends on how the game was feeling at that point to me.

Dude. I was at this game and I stood (or rather sat – sorry, still recovering from this head cold) with the traveling Sounders fans for a bit in the beginning and end. What a horrible thing to travel however many miles for! The game was over after the first goal I swear. The only thing you can do to wash away this awful performance is to score against Barcelona.

This is MLS, weird stuff happens all the time, like FC Dallas winning 6-0.

Yeah, MLS is too shallow a league talent-wise for the kind of consistency we see in other leagues to develop. There’s no Man U, there’s no Inter, there’s no Barcelona in MLS. The closest thing is Houston and even they have bad streaks where they just seem to lose for no good reason. If your guys are tired or just not up to it that day, results like this can happen. For us, the important thing will be to bounce back and make sure that every time from here on out, we’re getting as many points out of matches as we can, and especially to have good performances on the road, since most of the end of the season is road games.

    OUCH.

That sound you hear is the LA GALAXY coming up behind you, only one point away…
