The Refs

By: Steve | May 31st, 2009

It is sickeningly surprising that the ref last night was not the worst one we have had to watch in QWest. Either way, they did not play TOO decisive a role in the game as Weyland did, but instead could not really decide on a consistent standard to call the game by.

On that note, here are a few quotes from Sigi from the post-game press conference.

From Sounders FC v. Colombus Crew

On the team’s focus:
“I thought our focus was a problem… There is only so much focus and energy we have in a game and if we expend it on the officials then we will end up with results like this.”

On Marshall’s Ejection:
“I was just as far away form it as you guys but Marshall was jockeying for position of the ball and there was an elbow thrown, but like I said I didn’t see it.

On the indirect free kick:
“People might see it as a good scoring opportunity but what happens is that the defenders have to be 6 yards away which would be right on the goal line. It’s something the referees never enforce so when the ball is hit usually no one is on the goal line.

Yeah, that’s how I felt too. I wasn’t all that happy with the refereeing, but at least it wasn’t as one-sided as the LA game, where Weyland seemed to be responding to the crowd’s rage by punishing the team.

I didn’t come out of this one with an overwhelming desire to create high-quality photoshop pictures of Kennedy and his mom in compromising positions with barnyard animals like I did with Weyland on Mother’s Day. So there is that.

The ref didn’t lose this one for us. An inability to focus and create chances, a huge Alonso-shaped hole in the midfield, and occasional bursts of general sucking were what did us in.

I don’t see any inconsistencies in the way Kennedy reffed this game. Perhaps some examples?

If you watch the game, you could see a MAJOR difference in what the ref considered a foul in the first half and the second half. If you don’t agree that is fine, but try watching the replay, particularly the first 30 minutes compared to the rest of the match.

I’d love to…but I’ve tried constantly, and halfway through the second half on MLSnet, the damn replay just shuts off! I’ve tried like 4 times, and you can’t fast forward for some reason so I have to watch the entire first hour of the game over and over.

So I guess I shouldn’t have claimed not seeing inconsistencies if I can’t even watch the rest of the game…I want my $20 back.

I know what your saying… I used MLSNET to watch the replay to do the player ratings… it can be realllllllllllly annoying.
