I think this is a crazy week for both Steve and me, but I did want to link to this for anybody who didn’t get to see the game, or who wants to watch it again. Match video is up at the official Sounders FC site. Enjoy!
Completely unrelated, here’s my most recent “You know soccer has arrived in Seattle when…” story.
We had an app’t with the chemo doctor on Monday, and we were hanging out in the waiting room beforehand. I overheard a conversation from down the corridor between two women (which kind of doubly impressed me.) Woman 1 sounded older, Woman 2 aobut twenty-something.
Woman 1: So did you go to that Sounders game on Saturday?
Woman 2: No, unfortunately we couldn’t make it to this one.
Woman 3: Well, we were downtown afterwards and those fans were everywhere! And they do know how to party it up!
Made me laugh. You know soccer’s arrived when conversation starts appearing randomly in in venues and among people you wouldn’t expect to be involved with soccer.
Way to show your colors, Sounders fans!

I’m watching the 1st half and got to the 18th minute where Montero just made a mess out of an easy goal situation with a green goalie. Just terrible, but then the worst (for me anyways) was the commentators that play.”
“The reason for that is the last person to touch it was a Houston Dynamo player.”
You would never hear a commentator say that throwing the ball away even when outside the tackles is still a penalty, because it’s not. How can you commentate for a sport, be involved in it for a huge part of your life and STILL not understand how Offsides works? I’m tired of morons commentating these games, and then having to deal with the coaches, players, and parents who demand that I’m wrong because the guy on the Tee Vee Said So!
It does not matter if the ball ricochets off an opposing player, it only matters if it TOUCHES or is Passed by a player to a teammate who is in an Offside position (that is closer to the endline than the second to last defender) when the ball is touched by his teammate. It’s in the book in even more simpler terms, and if you don’t understand it there’s plenty of people who can explain it to you. Soccer probably has the most simple rules of ANY sport in the world, just read them.
Sorry but I’m just soo tired of people half assing their way around things. Either know what you’re talking about or shut up.

I have to agree but take it farther.. soccer commentary in the USA is about as good as a sandwich you would find in a dumpster. I can’t believe how, not only uninformed, but unexciting they are…. if someone just listened to a broadcast, they might think they were watching golf or polo to be honest.
Usually when I criticize someone or something, I know that deep down there is no way I could do or sound any better, but in this case I know for a fact that both all of my soccer-loving friends and I could do a better job than these a-holes. Put me in the booth with Kevin please

Did this site have anything on the other Sounders being named to the All Star game? I must have missed it. I just found out on the NY Times blog that Montero and Hurtado were named to the team as well!
Go Sounders!

I live on the east side and can’t wait to get to a game this season. My friends who normally talk about the mariners and seahawks are actually talking about the sounders… fabulous that the team’s taken such a hold on the city!

Not a part of this post but something we talked about earlier Steve. If you watched the AC Milan vs. Club America game you would’ve seen Alex Prus as the referee, a regular in the MLS. He’s nothing to write home about as a referee in my opinion however he seems to be absolutely hated by lots of teams coaches and players in the MLS. When I’m watching him ref a game I see him constantly arguing with the players as they just scream at him for this that and the other thing. It never seems to go smoothly.
This game was different, he was laughing, joking, in charge and dealing with what was actually quite a tough game. It was a tense game that had plenty of opportunities to get away from him, but he did something incredibly well and that was Game Management. He managed the players, talked to them, dealt with their concerns and generally put them at ease during a tense physical match up.
We could think that this is just a lucky game but I attribute it more to the mentality of the players and coaches of the teams. There’s just something different about American players and European players or even Mexican players in this case. I don’t really know what it is but their reactions to this referee are nearly polar opposites. This leads me to believe that the MLS doesn’t have worse officials, it just can’t stand it’s officials, and can’t let go of grudges. They’re not playing they’re busy arguing, where as AC Milan and Club America, came to play.

Dustin–you obviously haven’t watched enough Serie A if you think Italian teams come “to play” while MLS teams do not. They might be among the worst when it comes to referee intimidation. More than likely–both teams realized it was a FRIENDLY so they really didn’t care about a bad call all that much.
If anything, I think you’ll find that American players are generally more respectful of referees than Europeans.

JZ- like I pointed out, there were obvious flash points in this game that the referee dealt with accordingly. The players were very upset and frustrated quickly yet Alex Prus was able to keep a handle on the game. It sure didn’t look like a friendly if you watch this game, these players weren’t backing down easily. Also I’ve reffed players from all over the world, generally I find Argentinian players to be the nicest with Jamaican players, Italians a close second. Whereas American players can go either way, they can either be respectful and knowledgeable about the game which is what is happening more and more. Or they can be extremely petty and sarcastic, however it’s not like it’s something to do with Genes, anyone can be like this, this is just my experience with how different cultures treat sports and officials.
