Watch the Brawl and Riley’s Red and Decide for Yourself
By: Laurie | May 11th, 2009Here’s the video. The brawl that resulted in the Riley red is right before the 2:00 mark.
I have my own thoughts, but I’ll save them for later. What do you think?

Two things about this video:
1. They didnt show the missed PK call at the end of the first half. When that kind of thing happens I assume its because they have been told not to by the league
2. The replays make it clear that Keller was more deserving of MotM than Ricketts. He had more quality saves and the goal on him was much harder to defend against.Posted from

If you stop the video at the 2:14 mark, you will see Mark Magee grab Riley behind the neck and try to pull him down. Riley responds by grabbing Magee’s neck and then Magee flops. If MLS wants to get serious about this, they will look at the replay and suspend Magee. That would show the MLS is serious about players flopping.

It should have been a red for both plus a yellow for the LA player for delaying the restart. Typical MLS ref losing control of the game and not looking at the big picture (Simple Q: why did he throw the punch? Simple A:Someone was probably doing something to him first; too bad the good ol’ ref didn’t stop and think about this when giving out the cards).
I hope the MLS in its infinite wisdom (yeah, right) will punish the LA player also.

Did I write Mark Magee? I meant Mike Magee. You can also notice that Riley gets pushed twice and grabbed before he responded to Magee.

I see three yellows, Berhalter, Magee, and Riley. There would be only one yellow to Berhalter if the official was on top of the game. Berhalter grabbed the ball and then tried to grab it again. Magee grabbed Riley around the neck and head. Riley retaliated. The official ended up rewarding the player who stopped play and the player who initiated physical contact. There is also a better video of Magee pulling Riley’s neck and head.

Everyone here seems to be blind. Riley initiated physical contact, throwing Berhalter to the ground. It’s a fairly easy situation that the referee gets to diffuse. Riley decided to go vigilante and take matters into his own hands, not ok. Furthermore Magee grabbed Riley by the neck/shoulder, whatever that big muscle is called. Riley didn’t Grab him back, he struck out, it’s called striking and it’s a Red Card. Mike was probably faking being hurt, however referees are taught to look at the result of Violent Conduct only as the Final judge. The fact is Riley struck someone, and he was punished according to the Laws of the Game.

Sorry Dustin. Belharter dropped like a rock “a la Cristiano Ronaldo” for holding the ball; Riley’s pull was minimal; he should have gotten a yellow for “delaying a restart=yellow card”.
Of course Riley deserved the red but so did Magee for grabbing his shoulder/neck; unless they were hugging there it also equals aggression; had Riley been a bit smarter like Berhalter he would have dropped grabbing his neck/shoulder and hit Magee on the way down.
Weyland is a dope. The best thing at that point would have been a red a piece (both deserved); yellows for everyone else involved and a nice lecture to both team captains: “play nice or you’re gone”; but again, Weyland is an idiot.

I wouldn’t have given a red card to Magee. There’s lots of grabbing and shoving in these little melees and mostly it’s not a big deal just get them separated and determine who deserves what. Grabbing, isn’t going to get you a red card unless it’s particularly violent and it ends up with someone on the ground, otherwise Weyland would have a lot MORE explaining to do. However striking is pretty cut and dry, it doesn’t matter how hurt another player is at that point, it’s obvious.
Everyone knows Behalter deserves his yellow, but sometimes you get away with things, violence shouldn’t be one of them.

I’ve been watching the replays in stop motion. Berhalter is SUCH a diving scumbag! Riley was going for the ball, Berhalter takes a dive to try to draw the foul, then holds onto the ball.
Unfortunately Riley fell right into his trap. That’s what our boys are really going to have to work on.

Also, I have to agree with Richard. What Magee did to Riley was every bit of what Riley did back, and he was not the instigator. Riley may have deserved red, but Magee did too. At least apply the same standard to both sides!

Laurie, how can you call Berhalter a diving scumbag?? Was Riley going for the ball with his right leg, which he clarly uses to trip Berhalter (at the 2:10 mark). I do agree what Magee did, Riley did back. However, Riley should have dove rather than fight back. Perhaps Magee knew this, and it worked in his favor.

Yeah, Bob, you’re probably right about this not being technically a dive. Definitely embellished, though. And his behavior is…is… So freaking arrogant and unsportsmanlike. He makes me want to spit.
Check out this picture, a screen shot from after he goes down. Look how hard he’s still clutching the ball to delay the restart, like a little kid who doesn’t want to share his toys.

I’ll just say that Magees actions while childish are for the referee to handle. At no time does an opposing player get to handle that situation, especially in such a physical manner. In no way could I see Magees Grab as being the same as Rileys Strike. Laurie you yourself were looking at Stop-Action footage over and over to decide. Weyland and his assistant don’t have the ability to see the play again until much later, after they’ve made their decision.
