Were You at the Game? What Did You Think? (Updated with Goals Videos)

By: Laurie | July 18th, 2009

Either Steve or I will probably do some post-game thoughts a little later, but for now I’m going to open it up to you.

Just a couple of things from my perspective first:

  • Chelsea’s starters were warming up something like ten yards away from me. I felt like a little kid at Christmas.
  • I watched the first half from my season ticket holder seats at the 100 level, then swapped with some friends for the second half and went up to WAY back in the 300 level. I was surprised to discover that I enjoyed the 300 level seats just as much, and I could see the whole of the action better. The only problem was that I didn’t actually recognize all the subs by the tops of their heads, so I had a hard time second half telling who was doing what.
  • Oh, right. Fredy Montero’s only 21, isn’t he?
  • But Sanna looked sharp.
  • Kasey seemed to have trouble with judging where the ball was going on the grass.
  • Coolest thing ever to allow so manys of the non-starters to play. Made my maternal area go all warm and fuzzy — what a story to tell their grandkids!

More later. Now tell us what YOU thought.

P.S. Would you believe I forgot my camera? If you have any photos I can display, email them to me — laurie[at]theoffside[dot]com. And if you can shrink them a bit to allow our system to better accommodate them, it’s much appreciated!! (But if not, that’s okay too.)

UPDATE: Here are the goals. If you’re a Sounders fan, maybe you should watch with the sound off.

Sturridge goal:

Lampard goal:

Oh, one more thing. I thought it was great that the reserves were on the field at the end of the game and thus first in line for the shirt swaps. Made me smile. :-)

(Did anybody see who got whose? We were too high up. Also, what do you think the Chelsea guys do with Seattle jerseys?)

Lost my soccer flower today in Seattle!!

While I’m a Newbie to soccer ( only been watching English football for 4 yrs), I’d never been to a soccer match of any kind. It was FABULOUS!! Much better than TV, as expected. My two favorite teams on such a sunny, wonderful day. My son was in my Sounders jersey while I was in my Chelsea Blue. Sixty-six thousand plus packed Qwest with a large Chelsea contingency. While a Chelsea fan first, I was hoping the Sounders would have pulled out a victory. It would have been a nice feather in their cap. More disappointing was the fact that the Sounders didn’t score. I REALLY wanted to hear that place explode in a cacophony of noise!! However, all in all, it was a wonderful first experience with soccer.

MacBoar, the Seattle MLS games are half as crowded, but almost equal in atmosphere. Plus our guys aren’t playing against guys who make 100 times more than they do. Give them a try!

awesome first half… got a lil bogged down in the second. I was gonna live blog, but then my friend offered me to come sit front row with him…. AWESOME SEATS… I could see sweat beads on Ljunbergs head when he took corners… Great game, great fun, great atmosphere… its fun when you can shrug off a 2-0 loss since its an exhibition…

It was fun to watch on TV. We obviously struggled in the final third but otherwise matched up pretty well, all things considered. Chelsea were bigger, stronger and faster at pretty much every position, as expected, but Seattle played valiantly. Freddie looked like a kid at Christmas playing against Chelsea again, and he was easily the best Sounder on the field.

I was disappointed that no one could seem to get a good head on the ball to capitalize on our 11 (?) corners. But the passing and moving was pretty good. I definitely enjoyed the game!

Overall, I thought we did ok – it could have been worse. I am glad no one got injured and it was great to see so many green shirts waaaaay up in the stands.

It would have been nice to pull one back, though.

Loved it! It was a great atmosphere. Props to Seattle fans for the wonderful showing. I’d like to hear about Chelsea’s experience and what they thought of Seattle and it’s lovely lovely fans!

Also? I am kicking myself for forgetting to DVR this game.

(No camera, no cellphone, no video? I guess it was meant to be that I just experience this game in the moment.)

    Sigh.
