"Sure, basketball and soccer are not the same sport, but my hope is that the new franchise will help us forget the NBA, at least until the Seattle Super Grizzlies arrive in 2015."

Forget the NBA, forget the only championship this city has ever won (the 2004 WNBA championship doesnt count, at all)? You are loco, that Chilean water must have some weird stuff in it. I will never forget the Sonics, I will never trust this government again, I hate Howard Schultz (if only I could swear off Starbucks I am working on that one, good f*cking coffee, what can you do?). Getting another team sucks, MLS doesnt fill any void (but is a nice thing to have). How can 8 home games (that are boring unless you actually attend) replace 41 home games that are watchable on TV. Im sorry but this really sucks. You tried but it still sucks big balls. Damn you Bennett!!!!

shinn was definitely a hate-able guy, but he definitely placed all of the blame squarely on the city and the fans.

The Hornets left Charlotte because the city turned on George Shinn. The team owner traded away anyone who asked for more money and then had to deal with rape allegations that ruined his reputation.

When he asked for a new arena, he knew the city would say no, thus giving him the impetus to escape a city where everyone now hated him.

While I agree with the sentiment and feel for the city of Seattle losing its team to some no-good hicks, there is one point in this article that I really disagree with. You mention how many soccer teams have a sense of community connected with rooting for them, which is true, then explain that there are some examples of this still remaining in American sports, which is also true.

So for your example you use... the Yankees and Red Sox? You mean the overmarketed franchises with bloated payrolls and millions of bandwagon fans around the world who couldn't give two shits about the team if they weren't winners? THOSE Yankees and Red Sox? I think the Packers, Jets, Browns, Bills or my hometown Eagles in the NFL would've been a better example, and if you wanted to stick with baseball, the Cubs and Cardinals. Overall though, I do feel for the fans of Seattle and hope nothing of the sort becomes of any of my Philly teams (not that anyone wants a bunch of losers anyway)

That reminds me of when the hornets left Charlotte, citing exactly the same reasons — not enough fan support, and the people voted no on building a new arena. but, ironically, there was enough fan support to bring a new team a few years later. funny how they can say that the fans are disloyal and unsupportive, but the team has no need to be loyal and supportive of the fans and the city? i hope mls does not take a cue from the nba.

Er, I know NOTHING about basketball, but I thought the news said that Seattle is retaining the colors and the name. I suppose that Seattle could get a new team and call it the Sonics.

This sucks royally. I remember the glory days of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp back in the 90s, when I was all of 5, 6 years old. (Used to be a massive NBA fan as a kid). Even though I was a Bulls fan, used to love watching Seattle. RIP Sonics RIP.
